Waveriders dive into 2014 season

The Berkeley Waveriders completed a successful fall season competing in YMCA meets in Hartsville, Columbia, Rock Hill and again in Columbia during the final three months of the 2013.

The Waveriders are comprised of many members of the 2013 Berkeley Stags’ girls swim team that finished in the top 10 in Class AAA.

Swimmers Ashley Thornal and Sarah Mundy competed in the YMCA TYR Capital Classic Dec 6-8 in Cary, NC, a meet that draws in teams on the east coast from New England to Florida.

Mundy earned several top 10 finishes, coming in fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time 27.02; sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.18; seventh in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 30.31; eighth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:44.01; eighth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.31; ninth in the 200IM; 14th in the 100 butterfly.

Competing in the 2014 SC Rays CYSL Holiday Distance Championship Meet on Jan. 4 in Rock Hill, the Waveriders placed in several events.

Thornal brought home a pair of first-place finishes in the 200-yard intermediate medley and the 1650 freestyle, and a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Jess Belille finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke, and took fourth place in the 200 intermediate medley.

Tiffany Hennick finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Amber Hennick finished third in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle.

McKenna Richards finished second in the 200-yard flystroke, third in the 500-yard freestyle, and fifth in the 200-yard intermediate medley.

Tabi Dorsey finished third in the 400-meter intermediate medley.

On the boys’ side, Trevor Hennick finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle, and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Future meets include the YMCA CYSL Short Course State Championship in Rock Hill on Feb. 22-23. On March 13-16 qualifying swimmers will attend the YMCA Short Course Regional Championships in Rock Hill.

On March 20-23 the USA Age Group Sectionals will be held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
