Goose Creek City Council voted to change an ordinance for a part of the city that was never developed as initially planned.
Council met last week at the municipal center.
Businesses in Goose Creek’s downtown business district, or overlay district, would have had stricter sign ordinances than the rest of the city. But those plans never came to be.
“We envisioned a Main Street going through it,” Mayor Michael Heitzler said. “It was a wonderful vision.”
But it was too costly and not practical, he said.
“The Planning Commission thinks the ‘Main Street’ signage isn’t applicable anymore,” Heitzler said.
Goose Creek City Council voted to amend and strike a portion of its lighting of signs and signage zoning ordinance at its regularly scheduled Nov. 12 meeting.
This is the area in the triangle between North Goose Creek Boulevard, St. James Avenue and Old Mt. Holly Road.
Heitzler said the amendment is to remove verbiage of special signage.
Councilmember Marguerite Brown made a motion to accept the amendment followed by a second by Councilmember John McCants. The motion carried with a unanimous vote.
“The change to the sign ordinance really is not changing anything at all,” Goose Creek Planning Director Sarah Hanson wrote in an email to The Gazette. “It is just deleting a section of the ordinance which had been deemed inapplicable in another section back in 2004.
“When the downtown overlay was created it included a very restrictive sign ordinance. Almost immediately everyone realized it was impractical until the ‘Main Street’ area of the downtown district was created, so city council passed an amendment that stated only the Main Street properties would be bound by this sign ordinance.
“The change was so immediate that there were never any businesses that I’ve come across whose signage was required to meet the downtown ordinance; rather, the general sign ordinance for the city as a whole has always been used. Thus, you should see no changes at all in the signage around the city.”
