The City of Goose Creek will receive nearly $1,800 for selling less than one-tenth of an acre of land to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
That’s according to Mayor Michael Heitzler in statements he made at the Dec. 10 council meeting.
“The city received a large amount of wetlands off Liberty Hall Road,” Heitzler said. “My understanding is they have to buy it. We can’t just give it to them.”
The land is question is .09 acres. An ordinance to make the sale was approved unanimously by city council. Heitzler said the area was once made up of rice fields.
In other business:
• Property off 535 Old Mount Holly Rd. was rezoned from conservation open space to general commercial. This will be the site of Goose Creek Fire Department’s Station 3. Council voted unanimously to pass the motion during its introduction and first reading. The city is expected to have more information on a bid for the new fire station later this month.
• Recreation Director Gary Stuber said land is about halfway cleared for a new park off Liberty Hall Road.
• Planning Director Sarah Hanson said the owner of storage unit facility coming to Planation Square has worked out all but one issue with the Architectural Review Board before moving forward with the project. The property was once a Food Lion grocery store and was abandoned for about a decade. “We’re referring to is as Universal Storage because it looks like that’s what it’s going to be,” Hanson said.
• City council approved a bid of $15,689 to replace the roof of the golf cart storage building at the Crowfield Golf Club. The project is in the city’s 2014 budget expenditures.
