The Cross Lady Trojans are off to their best start in recent years, jumping out to a 3-0 record with impressive wins over Timberland, Lake Marion and Stratford.
The 2012-2013 Region 6 Champs have shown they are ready to defend their first region title in school history.
Third year coach Calvin Davis feels he has laid the foundation to a quality Cross girls basketball program that will be successful this season and well beyond.
“We have just two seniors and the majority of our roster is made up of freshmen and eighth-graders,” Davis said. “It will be like that for the indefinite future.
“We will always have a strong presence of younger players on this roster regardless how many seniors we play.”
Davis said it is important to reach these girls. Since coming to Cross from Goose Creek, Davis has done just that, building Park and Rec teams that follow the Lady Trojans’ style of play.
In the first three games of the 2013-2014 season, that move has paid off with convincing wins over much larger schools.
The Lady Trojans started off the season on Dec. 6 with a 39-27 win over Hwy. 45 rival Timberland. The Lady Trojans jumped out to an 18-4 halftime lead and never looked back.
Marchaeya Gilliard led Cross with 12 points in the win. Shanyra Lisbon followed with 5 points.
A night later on Dec. 7, the Lady Trojans put away the Lake Marion Lady Gators 44-36 for their second win in as many tries, again courtesy of a quick start. Cross jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead that increased to a 20-8 at halftime. Going into the fourth quarter the Lady Trojans were up 35-17 and held off a furious Lady Gator comeback in the final frame to preserve the win.
Junior Jayla Ravenel led all scorers with 19 points. Lisbon chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.
On Dec. 10, against Class AAAA Stratford at home, the Lady Trojans made it a perfect three-for-three with a 42-31 win. This time Cross overcame a one point halftime deficit to rally with a 24-12 second half to pull away.
Ravenel and Gilliard tied for high game honors with 12 points each.
Upcoming games this week include home and home tilts with C.E. Murray and a rematch with Timberland at home.
Over Christmas break the Lady Trojans will travel to Myrtle Beach to participate in the Shootout by the Sea Tournament and a New Year’s tournament at St. John’s High School on John’s Island.
The Cross Lady Trojans are: Shanyra Lisbon, Marchaeya Gilliard, Sanobia Simmons, Jenazia Hall, Jayla Ravenel, Bethany Brown, Allysha Wigfall, De’ssare Thompson, Zelphair Grant, Carde’Ja Ferguson, Tyjalay Hall, Dalias Ravenel and Khneisha Spann.
