Rita Cooper

Rita Joanne Stewart Cooper of Moncks Corner died Tuesday morning, Nov. 19, 2013 in a Moncks Corner hospital. She was 65.

Surviving are her husband, Samuel O. “Buck” Cooper; four sisters-in-law, Florence Wilder, Janice Ethridge and her husband, J.W., Ann Casselman and her husband, David, and June Turner, all of Andrews; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Candy.

Audrey S. Lewis

Audrey Faye Steedley Lewis of Bonneau, a retired tour bus driver for Great American and NEI, died Friday evening, Nov. 15, 2013 at a North Charleston hospital. She was 72.

Surviving are her husband, Leonard Lewis; two daughters, Brenda Ward Connolly and her husband, Craig, of Givhans, and Sue Watts of Gaston; a son, Troy Ward and his wife, Debbie, of Givhans; a stepson, Ronnie Lee Lewis of St. Paul, NC; two brothers, J.M. Steedley of Moncks Corner and Troy Larry Steedley of Naples, FL; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Claudia L. Mahoney

Claudia Lynn Law Mahoney of Goose Creek, a retired lab technician for Bayer Chemical Company, died Monday evening, Nov. 25, 2013 in a Charleston hospital. She was 49.

Surviving are her daughter, Lindsey Gale Mahoney of Moncks Corner; a son, Kenneth William “Will” Mahoney Jr. and his wife, Jessica, of Moncks Corner; three step-sisters, Debbie Villanueva of Aiken, Kim Price of Pimlico, and Joni Iverson of Summerville; her former husband, Ken Mahoney of Moncks Corner; and her companion, Mike Watkins of Goose Creek.

Martha B. McCray

Martha Breach McCray of Pineville died on Nov. 13, 2013. She was 73.

Services were held on Nov. 17 at Jehovah United Methodist Church in Pineville. Henryhand Funeral Home was in charge.

Tommy M. Murray

Tommy McCants “Tom” Murray of Moncks Corner, a retired communications superintendent for Santee Cooper, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 19, 2013 at his residence. He was 69.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Cox Murray; two sons, Michael Murray of New Bern, NC, and Matthew Murray of Garner, NC; a daughter, Patricia Cave of Mary Esther, FL; a brother, Jack Murray of Lebanon; and four grandchildren.

Mary C. Rodgers

Mrs. Mary Olivia Cross Rodgers of Summerville, a retired nurse with Coker College, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013. She was 95.

Surviving are four daughters, Pat Rudd and her husband Joseph of Sandridge, Judy Driggers of Goose Creek, Sarah Williams of Charleston, and Mona Thornhill of Summerville; a special sister-in-law, Evalyn R. Hull of Canton, OH; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mary H. Schlag

Mary Arminta Hay Schlag of Moncks Corner died Friday afternoon, Nov. 22, 2013 at her residence. She was 84.

Surviving are three sons, Greg Schlag and his wife, Susan, of Moncks Corner, William Schlag and his wife, Becky, of Moncks Corner, and Robert Schlag and his wife, Barbara, of Kingsland, GA; a sister, Betty Setinsek of Ohio; five brothers, Robert Hay, Charles Hay, Ralph Hay, Dick Hay and John Hay, all of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Virgie Mae Shambley

Virgie Mae G. Shambley of Pineville died on Nov. 7, 2013. She was 68.

Services were held Nov. 16 at Redeemer Reformed Episcopal Church in Pineville. Henryhand Funeral Home was in charge.

Edward E. Thornley

Edward Ernest Thornley died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at Tidelands Community Hospice House in Georgetown. He was 79.

Mr. Thornley was born in Moncks Corner on Jan. 2, 1934, a son of the late Ernest Leroy Thornley and Maidia Tarte Thornley. He grew up in the Hell Hole Swamp community of Berkeley County and graduated from Macedonia High School.

Mr. Thornley served in the Navy. He was a retired employee of International Paper Company and was a television repairman. He was a former member of Providence Baptist Church in Moncks Corner and Graves Southern Baptist Church in Georgetown, where he served as a Deacon.

Mr. Thornley was currently a member of Pawleys Island Community Church. He loved Bible studies and discipleship at the church and was working through John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion.

Mr. Thornley had a love for woodworking, model airplanes, electronics and all things pertaining to aviation. He had an insatiable curiosity about how everything worked. Mr. Thornley loved all animals, especially cats, but his favorite was his ox Bumble Bee that he had as a boy growing up.

Mr. Thornley was very devoted to his wife Shirley, his boys, and grandchildren. He gave his children a great foundation for life and was a great provider.

He was predeceased by a brother, Roy Thornley; and a sister, Evelyn Patrick.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Ann Miller Thornley of Georgetown; two sons, Colin P. Thornley of Ashville, NC and Chaplain (Major) Andrew L. Thornley (Leigh) of San Antonio, TX; four grandchildren, Jesse, Sarah, Abigail, and Rachel Thornley.; a great-granddaughter, Audrey; and a brother-in-law, Bryan Patrick.

Services were held Nov. 27 at Pawleys Island Community Church Chapel, with burial at Thornley Memorial Cemetery in Moncks Corner.
