Garden club to decorate Stony Landing House
As part of its continuing holiday tradition, the Town and Village Garden Club of Moncks Corner and Pinopolis will once again give the Stony Landing House in Old Santee Canal Park a touch of Christmas flair.
Stony Landing House, the plantation home on the grounds of Old Santee Canal Park, will be decked with live greenery and woodland plant materials for the holidays, courtesy of the creative ingenuity of the club.
The decorated historic home tour is part of Santee Cooper’s annual Celebrate the Season holiday light display at Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner.
Hours during weekend holiday fairs are 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 6-22 and is included in the $5 gate admission.
For the third year, this small garden club has embraced this challenge of decorating with the kind of trimmings on which Victorians relied, Southern magnolia leaves, English holly, cedar boughs and pine garlands.
“Club members choose different rooms and areas to decorate each year to provide diversity and more creativity,” said Barbara Massalon, the club’s project chair. “Members are excited to come up with new ideas for decorating a home as a residence might have been in the 1800s.”
“Stony Landing was built in 1843 at a time when Queen Victoria of Great Britain and her growing family included Christmas celebrations such as decorated trees, Christmas cards, presents, a lavish meal and gifts to the poor,” Massalon said. “Soon every home in Britain, as well as the American Colonies, featured a tree bedecked with fruits, sweets, homemade decorations and candles.”
While candles are no longer used as decorations, like the Victorians, club members rely on nature’s bounty and designing know-how,” Massalon added.
“Of course, all this has to be done without hooks, nails or hot glue,” she said. “Stony Landing, a popular wedding venue, was recently refurbished, so club members must be careful securing and refreshing live arrangements.”
Club co-president Maxine Smith said she had lots of faith in her club’s depth of talent as many members are history buffs, avid collectors and blue-ribbon floral designers.
“The Town and Village Garden Club appreciates the opportunity to re-create the Stony Landing House with all natural decorations as it would have been in the 1800s. Visitors will enjoy touring the house and stepping back into a Christmas past,” she said.
