Provided Summerville grad Matt White has committed to playing for the CSU baseball team.

Former Green Wave standout Matt White will join the Charleston Southern University baseball team next school year.

White, a sophomore starter for Spartanburg Methodist College, plans to transfer to CSU after he completes his second season with the Pioneers.

“Matt considered other schools but feels like CSU is a good fit,” White’s father, Matt White II, said Wednesday. “He likes what CSU has to offer. Matt has big goals so we felt it is important for him to go to a place where he can continue to play and their second baseman will graduate in the spring.”

White spent most of last season as the Spartanburg Methodist second baseman but also played some at third. After helping the Pioneers to a third-place finish at the JUCO World Series, White finished the season with a .333 bating average, 33 RBIs, 45 runs and nine stolen bases. He had 51 hits including four triples and four doubles.

During the world series, White carried a .441 bating average.

The Pioneers finished the season with a 49-16 record and as the NJCAA Eastern District champs.

At Summerville High School, White was a three-year starter for both the baseball team and football team who received All-Region, All-Lowcountry and HSSR All-state honors in both sports.

He maintained a batting average of more than .340 during his high school career and was also a solid defensive middle-infielder. He helped the Green Wave earn a baseball region championship his senior year.

As cornerback for the Green Wave football team, he led the state in interceptions his senior season. He received the Green Wave’s MVP Award and Defensive Back Award that year before closing his high school football career out with a performance in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game.
