Tyler Ragsdale captured the most votes to earn the title of Moultrie News Player of the Year. The junior linebacker for the Wando football team beat out nine other players for the honor.
Palmetto Christian’s Chase Shimakonis came in second place, Bishop England’s Hudson Little grabbed third, Palmetto Christian’s Joe Sweatt secured fourth and Palmetto Christian’s Andrew Johnstone tallied enough votes for fifth in the public voting. There was a total of 2,050 votes cast.
Player of the Year voting concludes the season-long Player of the Week voting -- a contest started by the Moultrie News a year ago. Last season, Wando’s Blaine Thompson garnered the most votes in the inaugural contest.
Ragsdale led the Warriors in tackles this season with 69 solo and 25 assists. Nine of those tackles were for losses, including a team-high four sacks. Ragsdale also led the team in quarterback hurries (18) and ball deflections (28).
Wando, the No. 16 seed in the 4A Division I state playoffs, was eliminated by championship favorite Byrnes this past Friday. The Warriors defense unit was at its best shortly after halftime, owning a 104-61 scoring margin in combined third quarters this season. Collectively, Wando forced 20 turnovers -- 16 fumbles and six interceptions.
