Byrnes eliminates Wando in first round of 4A state playoffs

The Wando football team had its season end in the first round of the 4A Division I playoffs this past Friday night at Byrnes, 42-14.

The Warriors (4-8) drew the No. 16 seed in the postseason after finishing third in its region and earned a date with Byrnes -- winners of the past two state championships. Byrnes (11-1) jumped out to a 28-6 halftime lead and although Wando running back Kenny Waring scored a touchdown and two-point conversion shortly after intermission, the Warriors never got closer than 14 points after that.

Wando only had nine first-downs and completed 3-of-7 passes for 19 yards and two interceptions. Byrnes, like the visitors from Mount Pleasant, struggled to take care of the football. The Rebels lost three fumbles and Wando also had a fumble.

Waring had 31 carries for 203 yards and both of Wando’s touchdowns. No other player had more than 20 individual offensive yards. Waring finished his junior campaign with 1,450 rushing yards (8.2 yards per carry average) and 18 touchdowns. He also added 213 receiving yards on 21 receptions and another trip to the end zone this year.

Lineman Nolan Kelleher, who is committed to the University of Florida, had a stellar final game in a Wando uniform with six pancake blocks and one knockdown.

Warriors linebacker Tyler Ragsdale had eight solo tackles, two assists, four ball deflections and three quarterback hurries to lead the defensive effort.

Byrnes advanced to face No. 9 seed Lexington on Friday in its quest for three titles in a row. The Rebels have scored at least 35 points in every game this season.
