The Palmetto Christian Academy football team was eliminated from the SCISA 2A playoffs this past Friday night in a 45-26 loss at Hilton Head Christian.
Hilton Head Christian advanced to the state title game against preseason championship favorite Florence Christian, which defeated Northwood Academy on Friday.
Palmetto Christian, although one of the best rushing teams in the state, has also enjoyed a successful passing attack this season. Senior quarterback J.T. Waters had totaled 1,757 passing yards with 14 touchdowns to just four interceptions before Friday’s game.
After Friday’s game, Waters and the Eagles were only able to add six yards to that total in the season-ending defeat.
Waters had 279 rushing yards and a touchdown on 30 carries but only completed 2-of-15 passes for six yards and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a Hilton Head Christian touchdown.
Senior running back Ryan Roe added 18 carries for 89 yards and three trips to the end zone.
Roe, also playing defensive back, led the team in tackles with nine. Both teams battled light rain for the majority of the contest.
Junior Ben German, who will be one of the top returning players next season, had a kickoff return for 76 yards to set up Palmetto Christian’s first, and only, touchdown of the first quarter.
The Eagles (7-4) allowed 22 points in the first quarter and never recovered. Hilton Head Christian (9-2) added a 13-0 third quarter margin to take a 42-20 lead after three quarters.
Waters and Roe finish their football careers at Palmetto Christian as the most dynamic 1-2 rushing punch in program history.
Waters had 56 total touchdowns (41 rushing, 15 passing) and 4,318 yards (2,555 rushing, 1,763 passing) this season.\Roe added 1,122 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.
