Julie Grant/Special to The Independent The Berkeley Stags cross-country team accomplished one of its preseason goals by competing as a team in the state meet in Columbia on Saturday.

The Berkeley Stags Cross Country team performed well at the Class AAA state tournament meet.

While not factoring into the top placing teams, Coach Melissa Hicks said her team accomplished one of its two goals set at the beginning of the season – to compete in the state finals as a team.

“We had a great season,” she said. “All of my runners improved their running times and a majority were able to meet their personal time goals they set for themselves at the beginning of the season.”

Top runner Austin Clewis finished in 90th place with a team best time of 18 minutes, 31 seconds. Tony Lilly placed 105th with a time of 18:45; Justin Dalton came in right behind Lily in 106th place with a time of 18:46.

Vance Bailey placed 138th with a time of 19:32 and Caleb Zink finished in 146th place with a time of 19:58.

Clewis , Trevor Cain, Jordan Davis, Richard Brown, A.J. Gavins and Linda Hodges ran their final career races as seniors.

“They have contributed a lot to the success of our team,” Hicks said.

The Stags are young and will return 16 runners in 2014.

“For only being the coach for three seasons I feel like we have come a long way from that first practice three years ago,” Hicks said. “Our times have improved and our numbers continue to increase. We have a big, bright future ahead of us and I am excited to see where it will lead us as a team.”
