Wagenlander

Steve Wagenlander has been named interim publisher at Summerville Communications.

Wagenlander will serve as publisher for the Berkeley Independent, Summerville Journal Scene, and The Gazette. He replaces Ellen Priest, who has been named publisher of Aiken Standard.

Wagenlander has most recently served as corporate director of audience development for Evening Post Industries. Along with his corporate responsibilities, Wagenlander served as the director of audience development for The Post and Courier.

“Steve is one of our most senior leaders and we are very pleased to appoint him to oversee our operations in Summerville, Moncks Corner and Goose Creek,” said P.J. Browning, president of the newspaper division and Evening Post Industries. “Steve is an enthusiastic leader and we look forward to getting him engaged in all three communities.”

Prior to his move to Charleston in 2001,

Wagenlander worked for the Indianapolis Star and the Lexington Herald-Leader.

He is a frequent industry speaker, and has been a faculty member for Inland Press Foundation Circulation Academy.

He was named Circulation Executive of the Year by the Newspaper Association of America in 2010, and Presstime Magazine selected him as one of the “20 under 40” top young talents in the newspaper industry in 2004.

“The opportunity to work at our newspapers in the fast growing communities of Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner is tremendously exciting,” Wagenlander said. “I also am also looking forward to working with our entire team of professionals at each property. They have done an outstanding job of positioning our newspapers as the leading local source of news and information, both in print and online.

“Our goal will be to continue to demonstrate a high level of commitment and involvement in each of the communities our company is fortunate enough to serve.”

Wagenlander holds a Master’s Degree in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Berea (KY) College. He and his wife Fannie have been married for 23 years and have two children, Allison, 21, and Eric, 18. Fannie is a kindergarten teacher for Charleston County School District; Allison is senior nursing student at the University of South Carolina; and Eric is a freshman at Wofford College, where he is a member of the basketball team.

“I am very excited that Steve has been named as Interim Publisher at Summerville Communications,” Priest said. “While I will really miss Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner, I know I am leaving the papers in good hands with Steve. I fully expect the community to embrace him the way they have me.”
