Y will continue swim lessons at downtown pool

  • Friday, November 1, 2013

With the annual closing of the Summerville Family YMCA outdoor pool at Oakbrook on Oct. 31, all aquatics for the winter season will be available at the Downtown Wellness Center pool.

The Oakbrook pool will reopen March 31, 2014.

The YMCA will continue to provide swim lessons to children and adults, as well as water aerobics and open swim, year-round, in the YMCA Downtown Facility’s indoor pool.

Private swim lessons are one-on-one instruction lessons tailored to fit individual needs and goals. Those with certain disabilities and those who have had negative experiences with water are many of the few people who will benefit from one-on-one instruction. Each package includes a total of six and a half hours of lessons administered based on ability and preference.

“At the Summerville Family YMCA, we are committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for everyone to learn basic swimming skills and water safety practices that save lives every day,” Gary Lukridge, Summerville Family YMCA CEO, said.

Registrations for private swim lessons are ongoing and are $120 for members and $180 for potential members. Semi-Private lessons (a ratio of two participants per instructor) are also available and are $180 for members and $270 for potential members.
