The Berkeley golf team shot a 486 score and finished third in the Region 8AAA golf tournament this week at Berkeley Country Club behind All-Region golfer Shelby Nuemann’s seventh place finish.

“Shelby is a sophomore and our most veteran player and has been our team anchor so far this year,” said BHS girls golf coach Brad Larsen.

Nuemann has medaled in two previous matches this year, according to Larsen.

Nuemann, Lexi Lucarelli, Ashley Workman, Olivia Hucks and Miranda Simpson advanced to the Class AAA Lower State qualifier tournament.

Nuemann was excited about her seventh place region finish and feels like her game is starting to turn the corner.

“During the All-Region tournament I was not playing as solidly as I usually do,” she said. “I had a few decent drives and fairway shots, but if it wasn’t for my short game I wouldn’t have made the score I did.”

Nuemann credited her putting for her 101 score on the Berkeley Country Club course.

“My putting was better than it’s ever been,” she said.

“I was sinking major putts for pars.

“I was kind of disappointed with my final score, expecting it to better. For my Lower State tournament I’m expecting my score to be a huge difference … more pars, and hopefully some birdies.”

Seventh grader Alexis Lucarelli scored a 112 in her first varsity region tournament.

“Lexi is a great young player, making her first appearance on the team this year as a 7th grader,” Larsen said.

Sophomore Olivia Hucks shot a 131 in her second varsity region tournament.

“Olivia has been improving rapidly since she first took up the sport just a

year ago,” Larsen said.

Golf newcomer Ashley Workman shot a 142 and Larsen was pleasantly surprised by the sophomore’s performance. “Ashley just picked up a golf club this August,” the coach said. “She is a determined young lady, improving her score on a weekly basis.”

Other young players on the team include Meghan Caluneo (160) a sophomore enjoying her first tournament as a member of the top five; and Miranda Simpson, who did not play in the Region 8AAA tournament due to illness, but usually plays in the fourth spot on varsity.

All five girls were set to tee off on Tuesday in the Lower State Qualifier tournament.

“I’m hoping my team makes it to state or I qualify for the state team,” Nuemann said. “Even if the worst of the worst happens, I will still be happy because I have the best teammates in the world, and I did better this season than I ever have.”

The team was to compete next in the Lower State qualifier tournament on Tuesday at Hackler Country Club in North Myrtle Beach.
