Dionte Evans scored four touchdowns and the Cross Trojans enjoyed their largest offensive output of the season, downing Lincoln 56-8 to set up a Region 6A showdown with first Baptist on Friday.

Evans scored on a 42-yard touchdown pass reception from Jamar Matthews, a 62-yard punt return, a 49-yard run, and a 28-yard run.

Diamonte Evans, Dionte’s twin brother, returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for the game’s first score before Dionte scored the next four straight touchdowns for the Trojans who improved to 2-1 in Region 6A and 4-5 overall.

After Lincoln’s Antonio Pinckney broke the string of touchdowns by an Evans with a 6-yard run, Devontae Evans broke a big one of his own with a 50-yard run to cap the Trojan scoring.

“We had a good week of prep for Lincoln,” said Coach Shaun Wright. “The kids came out strong and we improved in some areas but we allowed a score right before half for the second straight week which is not an improvement”

Wright said the season has been a work in progress in developing senior leadership in time for the playoff run.

“We have been constantly trying to develop leadership from our seniors,” he said. “The good thing about this team is our offensive continued improve play. These guys love the game and really are starting to play well.”

With the four touchdowns and big game Dionte Evans eclipsed the 2500 rushing yards mark for his career to join Shepherd’s more than 4,000 rushing yards.

“If we can continue to improve in our secondary and at linebacker we can have a say so in the playoffs,” Wright said.

But for now the Trojan focus is on Baptist Hill.

“Baptist Hill is next for us. They had a bye and they will be ready for us. This game always comes down to wire and it’s always exciting. They have great athletes and it will be a challenge as we look to get a win on the road for the first time this year.”
