Rob Gantt/Gazette Members of the Goose Creek volleyball team celebrate after their win over rival Stratford on Thursday night.

As the volleyball season turns into the home stretch, Goose Creek High School is aiming for a strong finish.

The first step is simply to focus and become more consistent, Lady Gators coach Jay Watterworth said.

“Finish Strong, we put those two words on our wall,” he said after the Lady Gators defeated Stratford 25-10, 25-13 on Thursday of last week at GCHS to complete a season sweep of the series. “What we’re working on is being consistent and finishing.”

Goose Creek (13-12-2) won the other region meeting with its rival 25-15, 25-19 on Sept. 17.

The win locked up at least a finish for third in Region 7-AAAA behind champion Wando and West Ashley.

The Lady Gators let a chance to tie for second slip through their grasp, losing 2-1 to West Ashley on Oct. 8. They won the first game 25-20 but lost a pair of 25-18 games to fall to the Lady Wildcats.

“A lot of it is immaturity and focus, and that comes from a lot of sophomores and freshmen having to play.”

Against Stratford, Shakayia Wilson led the way with 14 kills, while Kalexia Wilson added 11 digs. Setter Diemend Richardson had 22 assists and eight digs.

Before facing Stratford, the Lady Gators lost to Class A power Branchville 25-22, 11-25, 12-25.

Richardson had 16 assists. Shakayia Wilson had eight kills and Kalexia Wilson added nine digs.

Stratford also lost to Branchville.

The Lady Gators play their last home game on Tuesday, Oct. 15 against county rival Hanahan, then travel to Wando to tangle with the powerful Lady Warriors and James Island.

They finish up at Cane Bay on Oct. 22. A win over the Lady Cobras would give Goose Creek third place outright and send the Lady Gators into the playoffs on Oct. 29 against the Region 8-AAAA champion.

Goose Creek won the first encounter with Cane Bay 26-24, 25-17 on Sept. 26.
