I think I found out what the problem is with this football season.
Our guys just aren’t as good as their guys.
Teams go through these up and down periods.
Last night I saw the Berkeley Stags football team get manhandled by the Hanahan Hawks, 36-0. I haven’t seen a whitewashing like that since Tom Sawyer.
It wasn’t bad coaching, or bad players, they were just a better team. It’s their time. As for the Stags, well, it’s neither their time yet nor their turn.
Berkeley last went to the well in 2009 and had a team stocked with the likes of Bruce Ellington, R.J. Robinson, Rahkeem White, Evan McKelvey and a host of others. They were a deep team.
I could have coached those guys to at least the state title game, and I’m not knocking Coach Brown.
What did longtime NBA player and coach Doug Collins say about coaching Michael Jordan?
“You give the ball to Michael and tell the other four guys to get out of the way.”
Well, that’s how you coach the likes of Bruce Ellington. Just give the ball to Bruce and tell everyone else to get out of the way.
The good part about that 2009 team was that they had a second player you could say almost the same thing about in R.J. Robinson.
Built like Hercules he was a man playing against boys.
Standing on the sidelines I saw opposing players say, “Uh-uh, I’m not tackling that guy, you tackle that guy.”
People forget a lot of luck went into the Stags winning that title. Ask anybody in Goose Creek whether R.J. was down before he pitched the ball to Rahkeem White and you’ll hear their unified reply clear to Moncks Corner - “YES!”
People have forgotten just how good Bruce was. He averaged four touchdowns a Friday. Andre didn’t even do that and he’s in the NFL.
Someone called Sparky Anderson a great manager when looking at his tenure at the helm of the Big Red Machine in the 1970s.
Anderson’s reply said something to the effect that anybody could win with a daily lineup of Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, George Foster, Ken Griffey, Davey Concepcion and Cesar Geronimo.
Give Pete, Johnny and Joe the lineup card and try to stay out of the way.
The Stags went 13 years between state championships. It could take Berkeley 13 more years before they get another trip.
Guys like Bruce, R.J. and Rahkeem only come around once in a generation.
It took Timberland five years to get back to a state championship game they lost in heartbreaking fashion back in 2006. It was their time in 2011. They haven’t been back since.
Cross won it all last year, but ask Shaun Wright about how it’s going this year and he’ll give you a sigh and a shake of the head first before he replies.
Some of you Stags fans are a rough crowd, an impatient lot.
No one hates losing more than I do. I carry a pen and notepad these days because I hate losing.
But you guys need to exercise some patience. It’s coming.
Having a Bruce, or an Andre or a Rusty in your backfield helps a lot. Not having one though, is more the norm than the exception.
I know I’ll get raked over the coals for this one, but that’s okay.
Bring it on. Be a fan, the kind that’s with a team, win or lose, rather than win or tie.
