Lady Stags 200-yard freestyle relay team wins bronze

The Berkeley Lady Stags 200-yard freestyle relay team earned a bronze medal with a third place finish at the Class AAA-AA-A girls’ state swim meet at the University of South Carolina Natatorium in Columbia on Oct. 5.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team finished with a time of 1:44.83.

Sarah Mundy, a seventh grader led off the race and posted a time of 26.56 seconds; senior Tiffany Hennick followed with a time of 27.07 seconds; Sarah West, another seventh grader came in strong with a time of 26.66 seconds, and junior anchor Ashley Thornal brought home the bronze with a time of 24.54 seconds. The Lady Stags finished just 3.5 seconds behind James Island’s winning time of 1:41.34.

Region 8AAA was well represented in the top 10 finishers as the Lady Stags finished 10th behind state champion Hilton Head and fifth place James Island.

“Our tenth place finish was our best ever,” said Coach Robert Thornal as his Lady Stags previous best finish was 15th place. “For the girls this was the best season we’ve ever had. We exceeded all of our goals and expectations.”

Thornal said the boys team showed improvement as well.

“Our boys are young,” he said. “And our lone senior Tyler Mills competed in the state meet and had his best season.”

Top individual finishers for the Lady Stags include Ashley Thornal with a fourth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.44 and a fifth place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.83. Sarah Mundy with a 14th place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.99 and a 16th place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.74.

Tiffany Hennick placed 18th in the 200-yard intermediate medley with a time of 2:31.80. Jessica Belille finished 20th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:53.32. Sarah West finished 17th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.77.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team finished seventh with a time of 3:50.73.

Thornal said he gave his team the week off and then pick up the YMCA season this week with meets beginning in November.

“The Y and U.S. swim meets is where these kids get the real college exposure,” he said.
