Assault charges were dropped against Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office jailer Billy Wade Biering at an Oct. 3 Berkeley County Magistrate Court hearing.
The case was cleared as a nolle prosse, meaning the prosecutor declined to further prosecute the case. Judge Whilden V. Baggett was the presiding magistrate. Edward Phipps was Biering’s defense attorney.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) initially charged Biering with one count of assault and battery, third degree. He was arrested Aug. 13 and booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, where he worked.
Biering was accused of striking a restrained inmate several times with a closed fist on May 12, 2012 at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, according to an affidavit.
