Times improving for BHS runners

The Berkeley cross country team continues to improve.

Competing in the Lowcountry Invitational two weeks ago at Mullet Hall, several Berkeley runners posted season best times. The fast and flat course gave runners an opportunity to open it up while also getting a good look at Region 8AAA competition.

“Every season all my returning runners look forward to the Lowcountry Invitational meet,” said BHS cross country Coach Melissa Hicks. “The race is a great motivator to carry runners through the second half of the season.”

Region meets and state meet qualifiers begin Oct. 23, which leaves runners about four weeks to work on their times. It also allows Hicks to see where her Stags match up.

In the Lowcountry Invitational Berkeley finished behind region foes Hilton Head, James Island and Hanahan.

Austin Clewis notched a top-seven finish with a time of 17:21, almost a full minute off his previous best of 18:16. As a team the Stags finished 25th out of 36 teams competing.

“Just about everyone set a personal record today, but this will test us to see if we can keep that personal record because this was a pretty fast course,” Clewis said. “I’m pretty excited I only have 20 seconds to go and I’ll be at the school record.”

Clewis said the team has gotten stronger with every meet with every varsity runner improving on state qualifying times.

Other Stags’ times included Tony Lilly with a time of 17:58, Jordan Davis 19:12, Justin Dalton 19:15, Aaron Grant 19:31, AJ Gavins 20:16 and Trevor Cain 20:25.

For the girls Carol Brayton turned in a time of 23:34 and Linda Hodges posted a 24:17 finish.

“Carol and Linda continue to improve their times with each meet they run,” Hicks said.

Hicks added that the season has flown by.

“September has been a very busy month for us,” she said. “The boys have competed in six races so far. I have been pushing them harder this year than last year hoping to see the drop in times that is necessary for them to be competitive.”
