Weekly roundup: Area high school swim teams conclude seasons with strong state championship performances

Academic Magnet

The Academic Magnet boys swimming team won the Class 3A-2A-1A state championship meet this past weekend in Columbia. The Raptors girls team grabbed second place behind Hilton Head.

It was the second consecutive state title for the boys team, while the girls improved from a fifth place finish last year.

James Koval won the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and joined teammates Carter Brzezinski, Cooper Pitts and Alex Parler in a 200 freestyle relay victory. Pitts also won the 100 breastroke.

Elaine Zhou won the 100 butterfly event.

Bishop England

The Bishop England boys swimming team placed second, and the girls earned seventh during the 3A-2A-1A state title meet.

Matthew Adams broke two meet records en route to winning the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle events.

Adams was also a part of the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams. His teammates in both were Kurt Stieby, Jack Story and Malek Warner.


In the 4A meet, the Wando boys came in sixth. The girls team, led by standout Megan Kingsley, grabbed fourth. Kingsley, a member of the Mount Pleasant Swim Club, won both the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly events.



According to the latest South Carolina High School Volleyball Coaches Association rankings, Bishop England is No. 1 in 2A and Wando comes in at No. 3 in 4A.

Academic Magnet is slotted at No. 7 in 2A. Hillcrest (No. 1) and Aiken (No. 2) are the only programs ranked higher than Wando in 4A.

Coastal Christian

The Coastal Christian volleyball team cruised past Faith Christian during a match last Monday. The Cougars won 25-22, 25-13, 25-11 to improve to 8-4 this season.

They hosted Christian Academy this past Thursday but the result was not available at press time.


The Wando volleyball team continued to dominate its regular season schedule, beating Porter-Gaud 3-1 (25-16, 17-25, 25-18, 25-20) this past Thursday night.

The Warriors (27-4) had matches against Cane Bay and Berkeley, Tuesday night, but they were completed after press time.
