The Berkeley girls’ tennis team may have suffered its first loss of the season last week, but if they had to lose, the Lady Stags lost to the best.
Berkeley fell 5-1 to Hilton Head, the defending Class AAA state champions, but despite the loss the Lady Stags racked up two wins against Ashley Ridge, including a rain-postponed match from the beginning of the season that had been rescheduled for Sept 23. Berkeley also notched a region win against Orangeburg-Wilkinson.
“The loss against Hilton Head was very close,” said Coach Joe Harnage. “We lost the first set in all six matches but we hung in there and won the second set in four of them, forcing a deciding tiebreaker.”
Of those matches decided with tiebreakers, Caroline Lamprecht picked up the only win. The loss against Hilton Head marked top seeded Kristen Farmer's first loss of the year.
“Kristen is the number one player on the team and has been in the top spot for the past six years,” Harnage said. “The girls are very hard-working and are very motivated to keep improving. They were very disappointed after the loss but they will get another chance when Hilton Head travels to Berkeley on Oct. 15.”
In the shutout win over the Bruins Farmer won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0; Elliott Huxford won 6-1, 6-1; Jill Funk won 6-1, 6-0; Lemprecht won 6-0, 6-1; and Camren Tedder won 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play Laura Jackson and Sara Gianelli won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 and Emily Futrell and Laura Futrell won 6-0, 6-1.
In the makeup match against Ashley Ridge played on Sept. 23, the Lady Stags edged the Swamp Foxes 4-3 with Farmer, Huxford, and Tedder taking singles matches and the doubles team of Farmer and Huxford provided the margin of victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
