J. K. Gourdine fifth grader recognized
Damon Milford Jr., a 10-year-old fifth grader at J. K. Gourdine Elementary School in Pineville, was recently featured on Charleston’s WCIV-TV Channel 4 News for his prowess as a farming protégée.
The fifth grader indicated that he has been farming from a young age, accompanying his grandfather, who would wake him at 5 a.m. to visit the field where numerous vegetables were planted, or being planted. Damon’s father indicated that his family has been in the farming business for as long as he could remember, and considers it a way of life for the generations before him, the current ones, and it appears that it will continue for the generations to come.
Damon Jr. speaks of his farm with great love and pleasure. He not only plants and cares for his extensive garden with his family, but also sells his produce at Trident Technical College and at the St. Stephen Farmer’s Market.
This young entrepreneur has a strong intellectual mind and is already speaking about the manner in which he could contribute to society as a scientist; discovering ways to keep food from rotting and assisting in the fight against hunger.
I’m certain his entire family is proud of him, especially his Aunt Alyce, who shared the good news with me about his television debut. I am also certain that his J. K. Gourdin Elementary classmates, staff and faculty members and principal Lorraine Bradley, are also beaming with joy regarding the manner in which he presented himself.
We wish Damon much success in all of his undertakings and congratulated his parents on doing an excellent job of teaching, training and guiding him for a successful life.
Jenkins to Celebrate 80th Birthday
Kudos to Lorrie Jenkins Lockwood and Benita Jenkins Wharton, who are planning a special birthday celebration for their dad, Roosevelt “Junior” Jenkins, as he prepares to celebrate his 80th birthday on Oct. 5 from 2-4 p.m. at the Day Dawn Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
Mr. Jenkins is more than deserving of the honor being bestowed upon him and we commend his children for providing the special tribute. It is our prayer that he will enjoy his special day and live to enjoy many more such occasions.
