The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission is ringing in fall with a month of special events at the county parks during October.
Wine Down Wednesday
Wednesdays, Oct. 2, 16 and 30, 5 – 7 p.m.
Old Towne Creek County Park
This is a new event. Scenic Old Towne Creek County Park is not yet regularly open to the public, but on select dates this October, the park will be hosting community events featuring wine, hors d’oeuvres and live music. Enjoy this beautiful new West Ashley parkland. Wine Down Wednesday is $15 per person at the gate and includes wine, snacks and a commemorative wine glass. Registration not required. Cooper River Challenge Fishing Tournament at the Mount Pleasant Pier
Saturday, Oct. 5, 6 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Mount Pleasant Pier
Join staff for a fun day of fishing. Prizes will be awarded for the largest game fish catch in Adult Angler, Lady Angler, Youth Angler (12 and under), Senior Angler (60+), and Total Weight of Five Fish. An adult chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. Pre-registration ends the Oct. 3. On-site registration begins at 6 a.m. Prizes awarded at 4:15 p.m. Tournaments held rain or shine. Latin American Festival
Sunday, Oct. 6, noon – 6 p.m.
Wannamaker County Park
Feel the heat at the 2013 Latin American Festival. Celebrate the sights and sounds of the Latino world. Live Salsa and Merengue music will fill the air as you enjoy authentic food, craft items, kids’ activities, and much more. No pets, outside food, or beverages permitted. $10 entry; $5 for students and members of the military with a valid ID; free for Gold Pass Holders and children ages 12 and under.
Yappy Hour: Rawberry Jam
Thursday, Oct. 10, 4-8 p.m.
James Island County Park dog park
This is a free event. Bring your dog and join us after work in the dog park for live music by Whiskey Diablo and beverages available for purchase. No pre-registration required. Simply pay the gate admission upon arrival. Free with regular park gate admission. Registration not required.
Lowcountry Trail Half Marathon and 5K
Saturday, Oct. 12, 8:30 a.m.
Mullet Hall Equestrian Center on Johns Island
Join park staff for the inaugural running of the Lowcountry Trail Half Marathon and 5K on the scenic trails of Mullet Hall. An award ceremony and a party with live music and beverages will be held after the races. Food and beverages are included in the price of registration. Online registration ends Oct. 11. Participants ages 10-15 can register, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Fee: $48/$40 CCR Discount-Half Marathon, $34/$28 CCR Discount-5K, $48 & $32 onsite (if available)
Pups, Yups and Food Trucks
Thursday, Oct. 17, 5-8 p.m.
Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park
It’s a party in the park with your dog. You and your pup are invited to join the park crew after work for live music, beverages and food trucks. Music will be provided by The Bill Show. Food trucks scheduled to participate include Autobanh and Charleston Festival Foods. All dogs must remain on leash. No outside alcohol or coolers permitted. Free event with your regular park gate admission. Registration not required.
Wannamaker Movie Night
Friday, Oct. 25, 7 p.m.

Enjoy an outdoor Halloween movie on us! Free with park admission of $1 per person or free with the Gold Pass. The spooky selection will be determined through Facebook voting, and announced on the website in early October. Registration not required.
Saturday, Oct. 26, 5 – 7:30 p.m.

Zombies are invading North Charleston during this 2nd annual 5K obstacle run. The rUNdead 5k will feature a race on the trails of North Charleston Wannamaker County Park. Runners will be provided with a flag belt and must attempt to avoid losing their flags through the race course covered with zombies. Participants interested in playing zombies are encouraged to sign up in advance (space is limited). An award ceremony and party will be held immediately following the race. Online registration ends Friday, Oct. 25. Participants ages 12-15 can register for this course, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Race fee: $48/$40 CCR Discount. Bring the family to celebrate a traditional Southern fall festival. Harvest Festival will feature down-home delights like a crafter market, children’s activities and live foot-stomping bluegrass from five bands. This year’s festival will feature a barbeque cook-off between participating local restaurants. No outside food or beverages permitted.
