Donors come through for Meals on Wheels ‘100 Meal Pledge’

  • Sunday, September 22, 2013

Generous donations to the “100 Meal Pledge” campaign have funded the purchase of 15,857 meals for the homebound served by East Cooper Meals on Wheels. This equates to the cost of a meal for 43 recipients for an entire year. One of those recipients is Alfreda, who will turn 91 later this year.

Alfreda, who lives alone, has depended on East Cooper Meals on Wheels for most of her daily nutrition for nearly 13 years. She has some hearing loss and uses a cane to get around, so the daily visit from a volunteer who brings her balanced meals plays a big role in her ability to continue living in her own home.

East Cooper Meals on Wheels raised $35,679 as part of its summer “100 Meal Pledge” campaign, which asked individuals and businesses to make a $225 donation to fund the purchase of 100 meals. The organization committed to using all campaign donations to fund the purchase of meals for homebound residents of Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Daniel Island, Cainhoy and Wando.

“Our community really responded to this call for help, and we are so grateful,” says George Roberts, president and CEO of East Cooper Meals on Wheels. “We’re keeping our promise to never charge recipients for meals, and with 74 percent of our recipients living at or below the poverty line, that’s a critical commitment to maintain.”

In total, 271 individuals and 23 businesses and churches made contributions ranging from $5 to $3,000. One donor even made a unique contribution of $821.25 — enough to purchase a midday meal for one recipient for the next 365 days.

“Support for the ‘100 Meal Pledge’ also means that we’re ready to serve the next person who calls on us for assistance, whether it’s a 35-year-old mom who only needs our help while she recovers from surgery or a 90-something year old veteran who can’t continue living in his home without meals from us,” says Roberts.
