  • Wednesday, September 18, 2013

A residential fire on Sept. 10 in Cross proved to be fatal.
Patricia Pearce Hamm, 77, of Oakland Drive, died in a house fire at her home.
According to a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office incident report, as a deputy arrived at about 5:50 a.m. the Cross Fire Department was in the process of extinguishing the fire, according to the report.
The deputy spoke with the son of the victim, who also lives in the home. He said his mother was still in the home and he was unable to rescue her because the fire was too intense, according to the report.
The Berkeley County Criminal Investigations department arrived and crime scene tape was applied to the area surrounding the home, according to the report.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said he is waiting on the autopsy report and that the case remains under investigation.
