Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury has identified two Summerville men who died in an accident off Ridge Church Road last week.
Gerald Washington, 52, was driving and Dwayne Pierce, 50, was the passenger of a four-door Pontiac that, at about 12:15 a.m. on Sept. 12, accelerated through a traffic safety check on College Park Road.
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office and S.C. Highway Patrol were conducting the checkpoint.
One unit from each agency followed the Pontiac as it turned left onto U.S. 17A then made another left onto Ridge Church Road.
The sedan then ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, according to Salisbury. The passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene by Salisbury. The driver was transported to a local hospital and died shortly after arrival.
Because the Highway Patrol and Berkeley County Sheriff's Office were involved in the pursuit, Charleston County Sheriff's Office was called to investigate the accident, according to Charleston County Sheriff's Office Maj. Jim Brady.
