The Berkeley cross country team hosted its first-ever home meet and finished second to Bishop England over what runners call “a very tough course.”
The Stags (56) finished second to meet winner Bishop England (16) and ahead of third place finisher Goose Creek (127). Stall, while running in the meet, did not field a complete team and did not factor into the scoring.
Austin Clewis led the Stags times with a 19:43 mark, with Tony Lilly on his heels at 19:47, and football team punter and kicker Vance Bailey pulling double duty with a 21:05 time.
“I was very pleased with our place as a team,” said Coach Melissa Hicks. “However, I am looking forward to our individuals times going lower.”
For the girls Linda Hodges placed seventh overall and Carol Brayton followed behind in eighth place. The Lady Stags did not field a complete team and did not factor into the scoring behind meet winner Bishop England (19) and Goose Creek (46).
“We are still a very inexperienced team,” Hicks said of her boys’ team. “Our times are close together, but I need them to lower them below 19:00 as much as possible. Once we can do that we will be very competitive.”
Fielding a girls team at Berkeley is a new venture and the Lady Stags consist of just two runners, Hodges and Brayton. Five runners are needed to compete. However, Hicks was still pleased with how her two runners fared.
“Linda Hodges and Carol Brayton ran a good race and I look forward to their times getting lower as the season continues,” she said.
The Stags are scheduled to run again at home on Wednesday and in Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Coaches Classic.
