Berkeley falls hard in scrimmage

  • Wednesday, August 21, 2013

Goose Creek High School football coaches likely aren’t putting tons of stock in a preseason victory but one thing was obvious after last week’s scrimmage with county rival Berkeley.
The improvement from scrimmage one to scrimmage two was dramatic.
The Gators pounded the hapless Stags 61-0, five days after coming out on the losing end against North Augusta.
Against Berkeley, the Gators picked off four passes, recovered a fumble and blocked two punts.  Goose Creek led 34-0 less than 14 minutes into the game.
Gators defensive back Omar McRae was one of four players to score a pair of touchdowns for the Gators. He returned an interception 35 yards for a score in the first quarter and then recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.
“He’s a big play guy, which we know,” Gators coach Chuck Reedy said of McRae, who had 11 interceptions in 2012.
Gators quarterback Dantez Bennamon tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Jordan Barnes and fullback Darin McNeal added pair of touchdown runs. Backup quarterback Dominique Jefferson also scored twice in the second half, running in from 2 and 31 yards.
Fullback Evan McField tacked on a single touchdown and kicker Alex Jacobus was 7 of 8 on extra points.
The Gators will tangle with Berkeley again in a two-quarter scrimmage to close out the annual Sertoma Classic on Friday at The Citadel.
