JW Aluminum normally makes aluminum, but in the first week of August the company helped make a school supply drive a success.
Over the course of a week various departments had a friendly donation competition between employees at the Berkeley County aluminum company, located just outside Goose Creek on Old Mt. Holly Road.
The donations were part of Berkeley County School District’s “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive.
As of Aug. 9 the district had collected a total of 11,591 items with a retail value of $13,366. There were additional donations of $15,227.
JW Aluminum collected 4,237 school supplies for BCSD plus 10 backpacks stuffed with supplies and notebooks to be given to children at the Callen-Lacey Center for Children, a Berkeley County emergency shelter.
On Aug. 6 at 9:30 a.m. a BCSD school bus pulled into the JW Aluminum parking lot as employees from the plant and the district gathered around the bus and boxes containing the donations.
Employees celebrated by handing out a trophy to the winning department and pendants to the departments that collected the second and third most supplies.
“It first started as a fundraiser and turned into a competition between departments,” Todd Gross of the winning maintenance department said. “It’s for the Berkeley County kids. Everybody is a winner.
“We hope we can take a little pressure off the kids and teachers. It’s something that bonds us together. We like helping the community.”
“We placed second,” Paul Shaw of the IT department said. “It was very competitive. The competition was one week. We ran it on a points system.”
“We’re honestly just doing it for the kids,” Nicole Byrn of the accounting department said. “We feel as though Berkeley County is our home. It’s where we’re based.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to give back to the community.”
On Aug. 3 “Stuff the Bus” buses rolled into the Walmarts in Goose Creek, Moncks Corner and Summerville to aid in collecting donations.
Donations can still be made at the school district up until Aug. 19, the first day of school.
