A Walmart employee placed a small alarm clock in a cleaning supply box that led to an evacuation of all employees and customers.
That’s according to a Goose Creek Police Department incident report regarding the Aug. 9 evacuation of the St. James Avenue Walmart due to a suspicious package making a ticking sound.
The employees involved appeared to be going about their usual business and no suspicious behavior was observed upon reviewing surveillance video.
An employee transferred the box from one shopping cart to another along with other cleaning materials she appeared to have used in the store. The shopping cart was in the grocery entrance.
A different employee found the unattended box, heard a ticking sound and immediately notified other personnel. The store manager called for the evacuation.
According to the report, 17 GCPD officers, four firefighters and two medics were on scene.
At 8:22 a.m. the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad arrived and utilized a robot to enter the business and get a close look at the package, according to the report.
By 9:20 a.m. the bomb squad and S.C. Law Enforcement Division officials determined the package was inert. Employees were allowed to re-enter the store and resumed their regular business.
