The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged Billy Wade Biering, 49, a detention center officer with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, with one count of assault and battery, third degree.
Biering was arrested and booked on Aug. 13 at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner, according to information released by SLED on Aug. 14.
He was released on bond, according to Thom Berry of SLED.
SLED conducted the investigation at the request of BCSO, according to the release.
On May 12, 2012, Biering struck a restrained inmate with a closed fist several times at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, according to an affidavit. The affidavit continues that the charge against Biering is based on information obtained from interviews, witness statements, digital video records and admission by Biering.
If convicted, the misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to 30 days in jail a fine of up to $500, or both.
