Jailer jailed, charged with assault and battery

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged Billy Wade Biering, 49, with one count of assault and battery, third degree.
Biering is employed with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office and was arrested and booked on Tuesday at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner, according to information released by SLED Wednesday afternoon.
As of Wednesday afternoon he had been released on bond, according to Thom Berry of SLED.
SLED conducted the investigation at the request of BCSO, according to the release.
On May 12, 2012, Biering struck a restrained inmate with a closed fist several times at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, according to an affidavit.
The affidavit continues that the charge against Biering is based on information obtained from interviews, witness statements, digital video records and admission by Biering.
If convicted, the misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to 30 days in jail a fine of up to $500, or both.
