August brings variety of events to county parks

The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission announce several special events planned for the month of August at the county parks. The schedule is as follows:

Reggae Concert Series: Mystic Vibrations

Saturday, Aug. 3, 8-11 p.m.

James Island County Park

Relax and enjoy an evening of reggae music performed live in beautiful James Island County Park! Bring a chair or blanket and rock the night away to live music by Mystic Vibrations. Food, beverages, and souvenirs will be available for purchase. Outside alcohol and coolers are prohibited. Advance tickets will not be sold. Band is subject to change. Gates open at 8 p.m.; music begins at 8:30 p.m. Fee: $8; free for Gold Pass Holders and ages 12 and under.


Big Kahuna Fishing Tournament

Saturday, Aug. 10, 6 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Folly Beach Fishing Pier

Enter the summer’s largest fishing tournament. Prizes will be awarded in: Adult Angler, Lady Angler, Youth Angler (12 and under), Senior Angler (60-plus), Total Weight of Five Fish and King Mackerel. Tournaments held rain or shine. Online registration will end on Aug. 8. On-site registration available and will begin at 6 a.m. Prizes awarded at 4:15 p.m. An adult chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $13/$10 CCR Discount/King Mackerel: $15/$12 CCR Discount. For additional information, call 843-588-3474.


Free Skin Screenings

Saturday, Aug. 10, 9 a.m. – noon

Splash Zone Waterpark (James Island County Park)

Your Charleston County Parks have partnered with the Medical University of South Carolina to offer free skin cancer screenings this summer. Dermatologists on the MUSC Mobile Health Unit – a fully equipped doctor’s office on wheels – will be at Splash Zone Waterpark (within James Island County Park) on Aug. 10. No appointment necessary. Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series – Championship Race

Sunday, Aug. 11, 7 a.m.

James Island County Park

Do you have what it takes to compete? Take part in the championship race in the 23rd annual Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series – the fifth race in the five-race series. Spectators are welcome. The race begins with a 600-yard open freshwater swim in the lake at James Island County Park, continues with a 12-mile bike ride through the scenic paved paths of the park and nearby roads, and finishes with a flat 5K run. Athletes may sign up to participate in one or all of five races throughout the summer. Fees start at $55 per race. Spectators welcome. For more information or to register, visit www.ccprc.com/csts.


Pups, Yups and Food Trucks

Thursday, Aug. 15, 5-8 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park

It’s a party in the park with your dog. You and your pup are invited to join us after work for live music, beverages and food trucks. Live music will be provided by Big John Belly. Food trucks scheduled to participate include Cast Iron and Charleston Festival Foods. All dogs must remain on leash. No outside alcohol or coolers permitted. Free event with your regular park gate admission.


Shaggin’ on the Cooper with Palmetto Soul

Saturday, Aug. 17, 7 – 11 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Pier

Spend an evening dancing on the scenic Mount Pleasant Pier to live music performed by Palmetto Soul. Beverages will be available for purchase on site. Only 800 tickets will be sold for this event. Advance purchase is recommended. In the event of cancellation, tickets will be good for any 2013 Shaggin’ on the Cooper event. Series passes also available. Call 843-795-4386 for more information. Age: 3 and up. Fee: $10/$8 CCR Discount/$10 on site if still available.

Yappy Hour: Steel Rollers

Thursday, Aug. 22, 4-8 p.m.

James Island County Park dog park

Free event. Bring your dog and join us after work in the dog park for live music by Steel Rollers and beverages available for purchase. No pre-registration required. Simply pay the gate admission upon arrival. Free with regular park gate admission.


Movies on the Grand Lawn

Friday, Aug. 23

Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park (adjacent to the Mount Pleasant Pier)

Enjoy an outdoor movie on the Grand Lawn! Movie begins at twilight. Hosted by the Town of Mount Pleasant. For details, visit www.comeonovermp.com.


Moonlight Mixer

Friday, Aug. 30, 7-11 p.m.

Folly Beach Fishing Pier

Get ready for some shaggin’ on the pier. Let loose, breathe in the ocean breeze, and dance the night away to the sounds of oldies and beach music classics provided by DJ Jim Bowers. Beverages, food and snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets are limited; advance purchase is recommended. No refunds or exchanges. Photo ID required to gain entry into the event. Participants ages 15 and under can register for this course, but must be accompanied by a registered and paid adult chaperone. Fee: $10/$8 CCR Discount/$10 on site if still available; season passes available.


Mount Pleasant Pier Fishing Tournament: Cooper River Challenge

Saturday, Aug. 31, 6 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Pier

Enjoy fantastic fishing at the foot of the Ravenel Bridge on Charleston Harbor. Prizes will be awarded for the largest game fish catch in the following categories: Adult Angler, Lady Angler, Youth Angler (12 and under), Senior Angler (60-plus) and Total Weight of Five Fish. Pre-registration ends Aug. 29. On-site registration begins at 6 a.m. Prizes awarded at 4:15 p.m. Tournaments held rain or shine. For additional information, call 843-762-9946. An adult chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fees: $13/$10 CCR Discount.
