I wanted to share with The Independent excerpts of a letter that I recently sent to South Carolina Superintendent of Education Dr. Mick Zais.
• Distributed Practice (DP) is a highly effective reinforcing phenomenon to greatly improve academic achievement in all areas. Used by teachers with my middle school Easy Math program, it showed an increase in achievement up to 25 times what would normally be expected for the 17-minute activity required. Whole classes of math students, even the disadvantaged, will jump by 20 to 25 percentile points.
All of this and more is laid out in my book, “Intentional Educational Malpractice in America.”
• If DP materials are not already available, good teachers could be hired for less than $1 million to write DP materials across all grade levels that would save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars per year and move South Carolina to the top of the national in education instead of the bottom. Not money, but intelligent, effective ideas are what is needed here.
• Teachers using my Easy Math program have attested to many other positive effects, including improved discipline and reduced teacher frustrations. One can easily imagine other positives that will occur, including improved graduation rates, reduced crime rates, higher levels of employment, and more businesses being attracted to a more educated work force.
