Success is something for which we thirst.
But success is not defined the same way by all of us.
One of the most common denominators of success or one of the most widely used measurements of success is money. But as important as money is, it is not the only important mark of success, and for some people it is not at the top of the list for them.
Success is defined differently by different people.
I have been told by various people that if they were successful then they would have the things that make them happy. So success is a means to happiness, it is not happiness itself.
That leads me to ask another question. “Which do you prefer if you can only have one, success or happiness?”
I have never had any answer but “happiness.”
Others see success and happiness as the same boat rather than two things riding in the same boat. However you view success, whether as the means to happiness or happiness itself, the fact is we all desire success because we all want to be happy, even though happiness might mean something different from one person to the next.
Knowing how people become successful is not the same as being successful. I know a lot of things but I am not any of those things. I know how to be perfectly self-controlled but I am not perfectly self-controlled. I know how to lose weight but I am not losing weight although I would like to.
Knowing and being are two different things.
With that in mind, the key to success is application. Knowing is only a part of success. It is the application of the knowledge of the “where and how” that will enable you to successfully reach your destination.
It is true that the person who has the knowledge has the advantage. In this day and age in which we live that is not necessarily true any longer. What is the purpose of having a lot of information but lacking the ability to process it and use it effectively?
And it is not just being able to process it and use it, but processing it quickly and being able to utilize it in a timely manner. The winner is not automatically the person who has the information first, because having it and being able to use it are two different things.
Applying what we learn or know is a crucial part of success.
So let’s talk success. What are four things we can do to help ourselves become successful or more successful no matter what field we are in or what we are doing? That is the question we will deal with next week.
