The Berkeley County Planning Commission heard from Martin Marietta Materials – as well as concerned citizens – at a meeting in Moncks Corner last week.
The company has filed a request to rezone to “heavy industrial” 196 acres for “expansion of facility” at the Jamestown facility (Georgetown II Quarry) in Berkeley County.
The commission listened to a presentation by Martin Marietta Materials and comments by concerned citizens. As a result, the commission asked to have a meeting with residents and a possible tour of the facility by commission members and/or residents.
The meeting will hopefully be held within the next two weeks at the Steel Shed in Jamestown.  Signs will be posted.
The commission will again take up the matter of the request for rezoning for the quarry property at its next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Assembly Room.  The commission will report on the zoning request to Berkeley County Council, which will make a final decision.
