Dan Brown/Independent - Moncks Corner Police Officer Kevin Hamner is honored for his recent heroic actions. With Hamner are Mayor Pro Tem David Kizer and MCPD Captain Mark Murray. -

For Wanda Nelson, a school bus aide for Berkeley County Schools, May 6 could have been her last day were it not for the quick actions of Moncks Corner Police Department officer Kevin Hamner.
Hamner responded to a citizen in medical distress call at Berkeley High School.
“The call came in, and there was someone unconscious in a school bus at the high school,” said MCPD Captain Mark Murray. “Upon his arrival, Officer Hamner located the bus and found Ms. Wanda Nelson, a school bus aide, unconscious and not breathing.”
Nelson had apparently suffered a heart attack.
According to Murray, Hamner took immediate action and began CPR until EMS arrived on the scene.
“Once EMS arrived Officer Hamner continued assisting EMS until she could be safely removed from the bus and transported to the hospital,” Murray said.
About two weeks later Nelson was able to return home.
On May 21 the Town of Moncks Corner recognized Officer Hamner’s lifesaving action and presented him with a “Life Saving Award” during town council’s May meeting.
The Moncks Corner Police Department emphasizes training for its officers and holds Officer Hamner’s professionalism and application of CPR as an example of the benefits of training.
Murray mentioned during the June meeting that Nelson “is doing just fine.”
