St. John’s Christian Academy wrapped up a successful 2012-2013 sports campaign with its annual awards banquet held recently at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge in Moncks Corner.
The year was highlighted by the football team playing for the SCISA state championship last November, and other team and individual performances in basketball, baseball, softball and golf.
Joe Denton was named Male Athlete of the Year, while Hayley Singletary took Female Athlete of the Year honors.
Dan Glover and Paige Robinson took Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, respectively.
The Harvey-Bishop Award for the SJCA student athlete who has overcome adversity was given to Evan Hammond, who helped lead the Cavaliers to the SCISA state title game after the sudden death of his father.
The Denise C. McWhorter Christian Service Award was given to Bobby Winters.
Softball player Sarah Ham was named the SCISA Region III Player of the Year and selected to the SCISA All-State Team for the second time in her five-year scholastic career.
Robby O’Dell and Hunter High were named to the SCISA All-Region team in golf.
Other All Region softball players were Julie Robinson, Haley Singletary, Christiana Mitchum, Savanna Taylor and Chastity Weatherford. The Lady Cavs were eliminated in the state playoffs in the second round of the double elimination tournament.
Baseball’s All Region team included Dustin Parsons, Luke Hutto, Joe Denton, Evan Hammond, William Brown, Britt Pipkin, and Hunter Singletary. The Cavaliers won the Region III championship with an undefeated record.
The Cavs entered the state playoffs as the third seed and were defeated by sixth seeded Clarendon in the first round.
