The youth movement at Berkeley has officially taken over as a sophomore and an eighth grader were named to the Class AAA All-State team by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association.
Sophomore Zach Gonzales, who started his varsity career this spring by throwing a no-hitter, and eighth grade softball hurler Brooklyn Stone were both named All State in their first varsity seasons.
Both pitchers helped lead the Berkeley baseball and softball teams to Region 8AAA championships this spring and spearhead a youth movement that has overtaken Stags sports in recent years.
Both Stags baseball and softball teams graduate just four seniors this year.
Senior Andrew Lockliear was named to the All-Region team and was a North/South All-Star game selection as well. Joining Lockliear on the All-Region team are Kyle Garrick, Eric Orton, Dylan Baker and Connor Teague.
All except Lockliear will return in 2014. Lockliear will continue his baseball career next season at Florence Darlington Tech.
BHS Coach Landy Cox was proud of his team’s collective and individual accomplishments this season but knows his team fell short at season’s end. “Outstanding year but we did not finish,” he said. “Next year we have to be better at the end of the season than we are at the beginning.
“You know baseball has been better at Berkeley when you are 23-4 and disappointed.”
First year Coach Boogie Grooms said his eighth grade hurler’s poise on the field defies her years.
“We had an amazing run this year and I can’t say enough about Brooklyn Stone’s performance in the circle and what it meant for our team,” he said. “Brooklyn plays like someone two or three years older than she is. She may be just an eighth grader but she plays like a junior or senior.”
For the Lady Stags in addition to Stone’s All-State selection, Ashtin Kullnat, R.J. Reid, Blake Ponder and Peyton Svagerko were named to the Region 8AAA All Region squad.
In tennis Zach Dye finished another undefeated regular season and finished fifth in the state tournament, losing only to the eventual state championship. Dye was named to play in the Class AAA tennis All-Star match.
