The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10624 recently hosted a dinner for the three local winners and their families of the Patriots Pen Essay Contest.

This year’s theme was “What I would tell America’s Founding Fathers.” Of the 46 local entries, the three winners are all from Christ our King - Stella Maris School – Sandra Bruno’s eighth grade class. Winners were Brian Privett, first place $100; Natasha Tirpak, second place $50; and Rhetta Moore, third place $50. They each received a certificate with their checks.

Several Ladies Auxiliary members as well as some of the Veterans of Post 10624 were there to listen to these young students read their winning essays. “It was really wonderful to hear three young people talk about how great our nation is,” says Kathy Thomas, scholastic chairman and member of the Ladies Auxiliary. All three students wrote about how our nation is one that our founding fathers can be proud of, and how lucky we are that we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Annually, more than 100,000 students from grades six through eight (nationwide) enter the Patriots Pen contest. One first-place winner from each state competes to win one of 46 national awards totaling $46,000. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March.

Students draft a 300-400 word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest is open to students in grades six through eight (on the Nov. 1 deadline), who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories.

The deadline for submissions for the 2013-2014 program is Nov. 1. Download the entry form for 2013-2014 on vfw.org – Scholarship programs. http://www.vfw.org/Community/Patriot-s-Pen/

The theme for 2013-2014 is: “What Patriotism Means to Me”
