Garden Club Walk
Several members of the Belle Isle Garden Club recently enjoyed a nature walk through the Audubon Center at Beidler Forest in Harleyville.
A highlight of the April 2 event was an informative presentation by the center’s nature director, Michael R. Dawson.
Mr. Dawson explained the history of the facility and talked about the variety of wildlife that can be found there. A question and answer session followed his excellent lecture.
The preserve shelters the only stand of virgin cypress trees in the United States, which provides a natural habitat for a great number of birds, animals, trees, plants and more. Visitors can traverse a boardwalk that winds for nearly two miles just above the forest swamp.
Classes and lectures for schools are an important part of the center’s programming. There are exhibits in the reception building. Also housed there is a fine shop that features a variety of items including books, toys, gifts, and light snacks and drinks.
Staff members are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful with any questions one might have. Binoculars and guidebooks are available for your tour.
The Garden Club group held a picnic lunch at the facility’s pavilion
