The Green Wave football team wrapped up its Spring Practice Thursday with its annual Spring Game.
For the inter-team scrimmage members of the team are divided into four squads – first-string offense, first-string defense, second-string offense and second-string defense. Each squad then gets multiple opportunities to showcase its skills against both of its counter parts.
“This time of year it is typical for your defense to be a little ahead of your offense and that was the case for our first-stringers,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “The offense gave the ball up some. However, it was the opposite with our second-stringers. I like what I saw from our second-string offense. In all, it was a good Spring Practice.”
The first-string defense had about a half dozen tackles for a loss and forced two turnovers. The squad recovered a fumble and sophomore linebacker Mac McCurry intercepted a pass. He also had a sack for the Green Defense during the scrimmage.
The second-string defense also had some sacks during the scrimmage, but didn’t do as well stopping the offense overall.
The Spring Game gave Summerville coaches a good look at multiple players wanting to spend time at running back.
“I’d say three or four running backs did a good job,” McKissick said. “Davon Anderson didn’t participate in Spring Practice because he is still doing track and field stuff but we will have him back next year. Jacerie Ponder will be a senior next year and he is a good fit for our backfield. We are looking at using Travis Bryant as a fullback and we have some young running backs who show potential.”
Ponder had many of the carries for the first-string offense and scored on a run of approximately 60 yards. Darrel Ford scored two TDs for the Gold Offense, including one on a run of approximately 50 yards. JoJo Williams also scored for the Gold Offense on a run of more than 50 yards.
Quarterback Sawyer Bridges, who started as a freshman this fall, took all the snaps for the first-string offense. He completed 8 of 12 passes, including a 50-yard TD pass to junior receiver William Luck.
Bridges connected with four different receivers. David Coccoli, who also has experience at QB, made three receptions. Returning starter Johnston McCurry had two.
Freshman QB Krishaon Jackson, who played for the B-team this fall, took the snaps for the second-string offense. He completed 5 of 11 passes and ran the ball more than Bridges.
The Green Wave will open Summer Practice Aug. 2. The team is scheduled to open its 2013 season on Aug. 29 with a Thursday night game against Cane Bay.
