A big crowd of teachers, administrators and staff from Dorchester District Two turned out to support the presentation of the district’s budget Monday to the Dorchester County Council budget committee. Allyson Duke, director of business services, presented the budget noting that the district would, once again, be operating at a deficit unless the council chose to increase its apportionment to the district.
The committee had few questions for Duke apart from clarification on class sizes. It did, however, make a statement reminding the public that the budget presentation was for the district’s operating budget and had nothing to do with the recently approved referendum budget that is a buildings and facilities budget and completely separate. Committee members noted that the taxpayers would suffer soon from “sticker shock” when the bond issue amount showed up on their tax bills.
The committee listened to similar presentations from Dorchester Seniors, Inc., Trident Technical College and Children in Crisis.
Dorchester Seniors, which operates the Faith Sellers Senior Center in Summerville and the David Sojourner Senior Center in St. George, noted it was not asking for a tax increase but that it was being hit with a 49 percent regional decrease in funding that would be shared between four services in the region but that new mandates from the Lt. Governor’s office on record keeping and accountability would require an increase in clerical expenses.
All the budgets presented to the committee were recommended, pro forma, for a second reading by the committee to the county council at large. The council approved the recommendation.
