Lady Stags relay team state champs – again

The Berkeley Lady Stags 4x100 meter relay team has won a state championship.
The relay team of Jonnay Anthony, Marissa Pinckney, Donni Robinson and Ashlynn Smalls recaptured the Class AAA state championship at the state track meet on May 11 in Columbia with a time of 47.85 seconds.
The win avenges a third place finish by the team in the 2012 state meet. The Lady Stags 4x100 relay team won the Class AAA state championship in 2011.
Berkeley’s 4x100 relay team cruised through its meet competition this spring, easily capturing gold at the Berkeley County track meet, the Region 8AAA meet, and the Lower State qualifier.
The gold medal was one of four potential gold medals possible for Marissa Pinckney. The Lady Stags senior finished sixth in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes before winning gold in the 4x100 relay.
The Berkeley boys 4x100 relay team Rashad Simmons, Ezequial Jenkins, Josh Sellers and Ezequial Sepulveda narrowly missed making it a relay sweep, bringing home the silver medal with a time of 42.69 seconds.
The Cross Trojans’ Devontae Shepherd added a track silver medal in the jump to his state championship football ring with a leap of 6’02” and a bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 20.09 feet. Teammate Xavier Steed brought home a bronze medal, finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.41 seconds. Steed also finished sixth in the triple long jump with a leap of 39.06 feet.
Timberland’s Anastasia Kinlaw, an eighth grader, took a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.01 seconds. Kinlaw also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.66 seconds.
Berkeley’s Emanuel Collier finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.55; Ezequial Jenkins finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6’2”; and the boys 4x400 relay team of Collier, Devin Butler, Simmons and Sepulveda finished fourth with a time of 3:24.56.
For Cross, Arnell Steed finished sixth in the triple long jump with a leap of 39.06 feet; and the girls 4x800 relay team finished sixth with a time of 11:51. 88.
Cane Bay was represented in the Class AAAA state meet in two throwing events. For the boys, Henry Pryor was fifth in the shot put, while Tyrell Davis placed seventh in the discus.
For the Lady Cobras, Brookelynn Doctor was seventh in the shot put and eighth in the discus.
All three athletes are seniors.
