Bookmobile almost ready
After years of hard work, fundraising and grant writing, the library and county took possession of the Mobile Literacy Library (Bookmobile) in April.
For the next 120 days or so, it is being customized with shelving and computer workstations by a company in North Carolina. When it is ready, a special ceremony will be held.
Donna Osborne is the Berkeley County Library Director. “The truck and body are beautiful,” she said. “The ‘box’ company did a superb job and it looks great.”
According to Mrs. Osborne, the Mobile Library will serve the rural communities of Berkeley County, including the Bethera, Bonneau/Macedonia, Cordesville, Cross, Huger, Jamestown, Pineville/Eadytown, Russellville, Ridgeville and Wando communities.
The vehicle is capable of holding 2,000 volumes and four to six laptop computers for Internet access.
The Library System was awarded a $50,000 LSTA grant through the State Library to help fund the Bookmobile. In addition, the Friends of the Berkeley County Library has provided about $35,000 and subsequently pledged another $10,000.
Donations can still be made to The Friends of Berkeley County Library/Mobile Literacy Center Fund, 100 Library Street, Moncks Corner, SC 29461.
Happy May Birthday
