Twiggs to receive honorary degree from USC
Leo Twiggs, a native of St. Stephen, will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree during the spring commencement at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
Twiggs graduated from the old St. Stephen High School where he was Valedictorian of the senior class. He went on to graduate with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude, from Claflin University in Orangeburg.
He studied at The Art Institute of Chicago and received his Master Degree from New York University. In 1970 he became the first African American to receive a doctorate in Art Education from the University of Georgia.
His unique batik paintings have been widely exhibited and his recent book, Messages from Home: the Art of Leo Twiggs won a national award. Presently, he is Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at Claflin University and Chair of the official South Carolina Hall of Fame.
The ceremony will be held at the Colonial Life Arena on Friday, May 10. William Gates, former Director of the CIA, will be the commencement speaker. He will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service.
