Dan Brown/Independent -- The Lady Stags won the 2013 Region 8-AAA championship and top seed in the Class AAA playoffs with a 9-1 region record. --

En route to a 9-1 Region 8AAA record and their first region championship in school history, the Berkeley Lady Stags dispatched Hanahan, Stall, Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Hilton Head to clinch top seed going into next week’s Class AAA playoffs.
After stumbling 11-2 against James Island following spring break, the Lady Stags went 5-0 over the final two weeks of regular season play, including 4-0 in region action to nail their first-ever region title.
“I am very fortunate to be associated with these young ladies,” said first-year coach Boogie Grooms. “They may be young in years, but they play with a tremendous amount of poise and experience.
“Nothing rattles these girls.”
On the road against Hanahan, the Lady Stags inflicted their damage in a three-run sixth inning. Victoria Singletary led off the inning with a triple. Ashtin Kullnat then reached on an error, which scored Singletary.
After Brooklyn Stone followed with a single to move Kullnat to third, R.J. Reid doubled plating Kullnat and Stone.
The three runs would be all that Stone needed inside the circle, who allowed just one run in the fifth and pitched out of a big bases load jam in the home half of the first.
“The amazing thing is she’s just an eighth grader,” Grooms said. “But she’s a gamer and you can count on her every time she takes the ball. She keeps us in the game and gives our offense a chance to win it.”
Against Orangeburg-Wilkinson Jesse Stanley threw the shutout in the 15-0, three-inning win. In her first outing against the Lady Bruins, Stanley threw the Lady Stags’ only no-hitter of the season.
Katie Marsch and Annabelle Stephens had doubles for Berkeley in the win.
The Lady Stags open up the Class AAA playoffs on Friday at home against the fourth seed out of Region 5AAA. At press time Berkeley’s opponent had yet to be determined.
