Relay for Life's annual walk takes place Friday night, as supporters of cancer research and awareness will take to the track at Gerald Moody Field at Bonner Stadium on the campus of Berkeley High School to raise some money.
For the past few months Pinopolis and Moncks Corner have assumed a decidedly purple hue as ribbons began blossoming like springtime flowers on street signs, lamp posts and mailboxes around town.
“Purple is the international color for cancer awareness and the foundation behind the purple ribbons,” said Relay for Life volunteer Georgie Ford.
Ford said Friday's Relay for Life Walk format will change slightly this year.
The start time will bump up two hours to 5 p.m. and the event will end at 2 a.m. More activities are planned this year to fill the nine-hour walk, according to Ford.
“Everything's new,” she said. “Plus we have Deon the DJ back.”
Moncks Corner has earned some fundraising bragging rights, Ford said. The group ranks third in the state in Relay for Life fundraising behind Greenville and Spartanburg.
“This is just tiny little Moncks Corner,” she said. “And we're holding our own with these much bigger cities.”
In addition to great entertainment will be great food so walkers are encouraged to arrive hungry. “We'll have great food and all proceeds go to benefit Relay for Life,” Ford said.
Purple ribbons are still on sale and can be purchased at Crafts Plus and Berkeley Florist for $10.
