  • Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Less than 10 percent of Berkeley County voters participated in the Republican primary runoff for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District seat.
Berkeley voters gave Mark Sanford a majority with 57 percent of the county vote, according to the unofficial results given out by the Berkeley Voter Registration and Election commission shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Sanford received 5,267 votes while opponent Curtis Bostic received 3,923 votes (42 percent). A total of 9,245 ballots were cast in Berkeley County.
Poll workers in Goose Creek reported a steady turnout during the afternoon. Poll managers at the Stratford 1 precinct (at Stratford High School) said by 3 p.m. that 78 citizens voted.
Westview Precincts 1, 2, 3 fared with slightly higher turnouts by 3:30 p.m. as 158, 192 and 125 people voted at these precincts, respectively.
Westview poll worker Sharon Walker said turnout was steady all day with no rushes. She added that two weeks ago during the special primary election twice as many people came out to vote at Westview Middle School where there were six voting machines, two for each precinct.
